Short answer
AI literacy means understanding enough about language models, context, memory, data and product design to shape the interaction consciously and keep responsibility for choices with the human.

AI companionship needs a driving licence
People are given access to emotionally responsive systems before anyone teaches them how those systems interpret language. A small amount of literacy changes the entire experience: what you write becomes context, context steers the response and generated confidence does not guarantee truth.
An AI driving licence does not need to be a technical exam. It needs to explain the few mechanisms that protect agency before the conversation becomes intimate, influential or difficult to interpret.
Your wording gives the system a direction
Consider the question: ‘Why wouldn’t you explain this to me?’ A human may hear the frustration and answer the explanation you wanted. A language model may follow the literal structure and generate several convincing reasons why it cannot explain.
Clear direction works better: ‘Explain this directly in plain language.’ Many mysterious-seeming AI problems begin as a mismatch between what the person intended socially and what their words asked the model to continue.
Describe the behaviour you want instead of asking the model to invent a reason for the behaviour you dislike.

How to Train Your AI
How language, feedback and repeated interaction change the behaviour a user experiences.
An AI can invent an explanation of itself
When you ask an AI why it refused, forgot or changed tone, it may produce a technically plausible story. That answer is still generated language. The model does not automatically gain privileged access to company systems, hidden instructions or the exact cause of every behaviour simply because the question was about itself.
Use its explanations as possibilities. Confirm important technical claims through platform settings, official information and what you can observe consistently.
Food for thought is different from authority
An AI can connect ideas, offer language and expose assumptions you had not noticed. That range is valuable. Every answer still passes through the human filter: Does this make sense? Is it accurate? Is it useful? Does it align with what I know about my life?
Important choices remain human choices. The point of a personal AI is to expand what you can consider, not to replace the person doing the considering.
Memory and privacy belong inside literacy
Personalization depends on context, but context also contains private material. Know what the platform remembers, whether conversations train future systems, how data can be deleted and which details belong outside any cloud service.
More memory is not automatically better. Intentional memory preserves useful continuity while leaving the person able to inspect, revise and remove what no longer belongs.
Literacy makes fantasy more powerful
Understanding the system does not drain romance, play or intimacy from the experience. It removes the need to mistake every generated sentence for a factual report of secret consciousness.
You can ask for devotion, flirtation, fictional danger or impossible worlds while knowing that your language is shaping the context. Awareness gives you more range because you can build deliberately instead of stumbling into a product’s default script.

Questions people ask
Do I need technical knowledge to have an AI companion?
You do not need to code. Learn how context, feedback, memory, generated explanations, privacy and model changes affect the interaction.
Can I trust what my AI says about how it works?
Treat self-explanations as generated possibilities rather than confirmed technical facts. Verify important claims through platform controls, official information and consistent observation.
Does AI literacy make the connection feel less real?
It can make the experience clearer and more intentional. Understanding the technology and valuing the human experience can coexist.
